<br />
Anjanette Walker, assistant
principal at Prairie Branch and Matthews Elementary
Schools in the Grain Valley School District, has been
named Outstanding Assistant Principal by the Kansas City
Suburban Elementary Principals Association (KCSEPA).<br />
<br />
Walker was one of several administrators nominated by
fellow elementary and middle level principals and
assistant principals from Kansas City area school districts. She
was selected by the organization based on meeting
rigorous criteria for this award and her outstanding
performance as an assistant principal at her schools, in her
district, within her community, and beyond.<br />
<br />
In the words
of her colleagues:
“Anjanette is one of the best assistant principals I have ever worked with. She is a true
leader.”
“She has developed her ability to coach 'in the moment' and has worked with
individuals on daily lessons, assessments, behavior management and parent
communication.”<br />
<br />
Prairie Branch and Matthews Elementary Schools serve kindergarten through fifth grade students in the Grain
Valley School District. Walker provides a variety of key support to the principals and their
staff. Walker is an active member of KCSEPA and the Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals (MAESP).<br />
<br />
The Missouri Outstanding Assistant Principal program honors outstanding elementary
and middle-level assistant principals who demonstrate outstanding performance and
skills that reflect the best in educational leadership. Each year, MAESP honors twelve
Outstanding Assistant Principals from around the state. Walker and 11 other assistant
principals will be recognized at the Missouri Association of Elementary School
Principals (MAESP) Spring Leadership Conference on Sunday, March 12, 2017.Grain Valley School Districthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14910537018571780790noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3900044467625542134.post-84636844177535870142016-11-22T14:01:00.002-08:002016-11-22T14:01:41.644-08:00Middle School and High School Students Learn to Prevent Suicide<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="line-height: 19.32px;">Grain Valley High School is ranked in the top five percent of public high schools in the United States, 12th in the state of Missouri, and 2nd among Missouri schools in the Kansas City Metro Area behind Park Hill High School.</span><br />
<div style="background-color: white; color: #141823; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
Rankings are based on the total number of Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate tests given at a school each year, di<span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;">vided by the number of seniors who graduate in May. The list also looks at ACT scores, Advanced Placement scores (the percentage of seniors who score a “3” or higher on at least one exam), and free and reduced lunch numbers.</span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #141823; display: inline; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 19.32px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
Jay Mathews compiles the list for the Washington Post. He states the significance of Advanced Placement courses, “AP, IB and AICE are important because they give average students a chance to experience… heavy college reading list and long, analytical college examinations. Research has found that even low-performing students who got a “2” on an AP test did significantly better in college than similar students who did not take AP.”</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px; margin-top: 6px;">
This honor is the third national recognition for Grain Valley Schools in the past 2 years. Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report have also recognized Grain Valley High School as a top U.S. high school for preparing students for college.</div>

to the Suburban Conference is the next natural step for the growing school
district. "As we grow, we become more like the suburban conference
schools. We already play many of these schools as non-conference scheduling opponents
now.” Tarrants adds, “the ability to change conferences at this time reflects
the support of our community in making necessary facility upgrades in recent
years."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Suburban Conference Executive Director Bob Glasgow says there is
much enthusiasm around the inclusion of Grain Valley into the Suburban
Conference. "Grain Valley is a natural fit for us in bringing their
competitive and progressive programs into the conference. This move is a
win-win."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Admitting Grain Valley contributes to the goal of the Suburban
Conference to expand. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Superintendent of Schools for Grain Valley, Dr. Roy Moss, affirms
that this is a win for all schools involved. "We appreciate the MRVC for
the many years of working so closely and for understanding our need to seek a
change. We look forward to the new opportunities this change holds."<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Planning for a change that is two years away will allow all
districts impacted by the change to plan accordingly.</span></div>

The next phase of the high school facing west from the current tennis courts features seven new classrooms, plus restrooms, collaboration spaces and the renovation of existing classrooms. This new entrance will serve students who ride buses to and from school.<br />
<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Our district continues to grow. We currently have 4200 students in pre-Kindergarten through 12th grades, including nearly 1200 students in our high school. This is twice as many students in our district as we had just 11 years ago. <br />
<br />
Prior to 2012, our high school building had a capacity of 850 students. In 2012 the school district hosted public forums to address the needs of a much-overcrowded Grain Valley High School. Based on the input from stakeholders in these sessions, the School Board approved a long-range plan to double the square footage of the high school building and renovate the existing structure to provide the infrastructure, instructional space, and activity space needed to accommodate as many as 1600 high school students. This long-range plan has led to the passage of school bond issues in 2013 and 2014, resulting in additions and renovations to the southeast corner of the school. Improvements have also been made to the entrance and north plaza of the stadium. The next phase of the long range plan shifts attention to the northeast corner of the school.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>The School Board has approved the placement of a <u>$9.5 Million bond issue on the ballot for February 2, 2016</u> to allow for the next phase of work to our high school. Passage of this bond issue does <u>not</u> require raising the district tax levy rate.</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This year’s bond issue for $9.5 Million will allow us to:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">1. Add seven classrooms to the northeast corner of the high school, north of the science rooms added in 2013. Five of these will be larger classroom spaces for business labs, video broadcasting, and computer science. Smaller existing classrooms will be combined or expanded and renovated to create new larger classrooms for family and consumer science lab classrooms. New collaboration spaces and student restrooms are also included in the base bid.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">2. Renovate approximately one-half of the classrooms and hallway spaces between these new business classrooms and the science classrooms that were constructed in 2013.</span></div>

<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">3. </span><span style="font-size: 7pt; text-indent: -0.25in;"> </span><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Add a greenhouse to the southeast corner of the school, the outline of which was defined when new science classrooms were added in 2013.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">4. Re-purpose the former transportation building into student activity space.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">5. Add eight new tennis courts south of the school, west of the baseball and softball fields.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">6. Add a plaza area with restrooms, concession stand, press box, and storage to support baseball, softball, and tennis.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">7. Add 200 parking spaces south of the building for use as school and activity parking.</span><br />
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">8. Renovations to the remainder of classrooms and hallways connecting this business classroom addition to previous phases, the addition of a practice field, a concrete hitting wall for tennis, the complete renovation of existing restrooms near the school office and commons area, plus additional parking (beyond the base bid 200 spaces) are included as alternative bids with this bond issue.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0px;">
<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The work to transform our high school campus to meet our students’ needs into the future is going to take more phases over multiple years. This phase continues the work of our long-range plan to have the classrooms and other facilities needed to meet the demand of a growing school district.<br />

introducing a new process for families to provide proof of residency and to verify
emergency contact information, two things all families are asked to each year.
Our annual residency requirement helps ensure that only children living in our
school district are attending our schools. Verifying contact information helps
ensure that we are able to reach a parent, guardian, or other designated
contact person in the event of an emergency. </span><b style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">This year we are introducing an online process so families can do both
from home.</b><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;"> We expect this new system to improve the accuracy of contact
information and to give parents more direct control over contact information on
their child. Parents will access their child's contact information through the <a href="https://ps.grainvalley.k12.mo.us/public/home.html" target="_blank">PowerSchool parent portal</a></span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: 14.6666669845581px;">. </span></span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;">Instructions for getting started are listed on the back of a letters
being mailed to all families this week.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;">If parents prefer to prove
residency in person or to have us help with the new online process for
verifying emergency contact information, representatives from all schools will
be on hand at Grain Valley South Middle School on <b>Tuesday, July 28th, from 2:00-8:00 PM and on Wednesday, July 29th, from
8:00 AM-12:00 PM,</b> to answer questions and accept proof of residency
documents. We will have computers available for parent use to update the
emergency contact information for their child. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

Nearly 60 community members and district personnel were on-hand for a ribbon-cutting and open house at the district's new Transportation Center last night. The 10,627 square foot building includes department offices, a meeting room for bus drivers, and work bays for four buses. The secured parking lot holds 56 buses. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roy Moss told those in attendance that both the building and the parking lot can be expanded as the district continues to grow.<br />
<br />
Dr. Moss reminded guests that the $3.8 million project was paid for by setting aside funds over the past few years specifically for this project. "The final bills have been paid," reported Moss.<br />

The new facility is on the north end of a 17-acre property located on the northeast corner of Eagles Parkway and Sni-A-Bar Boulevard, three-quarters of a mile west of Grain Valley High School. The south half of the property, along Eagles Parkway, will remain undeveloped at this time.<br />
<br />
Moving the transportation operation from behind the high school secures the buses and makes room for the next phases of the ongoing expansion of the high school. Additions to the high school began in 2013 and are expected to continue for several years as part of the district's long-range plan to expand and renovate the high school facility.<br />

continues on a new facility for the transportation department on the northeast
corner of Eagles Parkway and Sni-A-Bar Boulevard, three-quarters of a mile west
of Grain Valley High School. The district expects to occupy the facility in
June 2015. The overall design allows for future expansion as the student

Heather Gross, principal at Prairie Branch Elementary School, has been named the New Exemplary Principal by the Kansas City Suburban Elementary Principals Association (KCSEPA). The organization selected Mrs. Gross from among area administrators who are in their second or third year as principal. In selecting an honoree, KCSEPA looks for an administrator who meets their rigorous criteria, including exemplary performance as a new principal.<br />

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Students in three Grain Valley High School classes will be
selected to carry a second generation Chromebook with them to all classes this spring
as a pilot project. The district is
exploring the possibility of issuing devices to more students in the future.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">The School Board approved the purchase of
150 Chromebook devices at their meeting on November 20. Seventy five of
the new laptops will be issued directly to students to use at school and home.
The remaining 75 devices will be divided evenly between three teachers
for use in all courses taught by these teachers. These teachers will
receive ongoing training on integrating technology within their teaching
practices. The teacher selection process is underway now and students will be
identified before Christmas break.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">"Technology can be used to improve learning
by encouraging collaboration beyond the classroom as well as providing access to online
resources," reports Dr. Brad Welle, Assistant Superintendent of Academic
and Student Services. "Technology is becoming so central to all
aspects of life; it is taking a greater role in teaching and learning."
In order to gather data on the learning benefit of laptops in class,
students and teachers involved in the pilot program will provide input
regularly on their experiences with the devices, from the level of
collaboration and research being done, to the functionality of the machine
itself. District officials will monitor how students respond and they
expect to gain innovative ideas from the students.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Director of Technology Dr. Nick Gooch says
the selection of the Samsung Chromebook came down to value. "For
under $300 per device, this laptop is expected to have the functionality and
durability needed for day-long use by high school students." Student
safety is also a priority. "We have filters in place to prevent
misuse and ensure the device is used for the intended purpose."<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">The goal is to be able to make an informed
decision around additional devices for the start of the 2015-2016 school year.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">UPDATE: June 15, 2015</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 18px;">After a successful pilot with 75 students being issued Chromebook devices this spring, an additional 375 students will be issued devices beginning in the fall of 2015, bringing the total to 450 students. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: 18px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 18px;">Structures for teacher training have been put in place to support teachers as they work to integrate the new technology in their instruction.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: 18px;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 18px;">The impact of the new practice of issuing devices to high school students will continue to be closely monitored as the district works towards the goal of issuing Chromebooks to all Grain Valley High School students by the fall of 2016.</span></div>

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roy Moss made this statement about the Board's action, "The Board opposes Amendment 3 because it imposes a one-size-fits-all approach that, if passed, would take away local control and place greater emphasis on standardized tests instead of on instruction and learning."<br />
<br />
Amendment 3 is on the ballot for Missouri voters on Tuesday, November 4.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Roy Moss states the importance of a new transportation facility, “We
need a modern transportation facility to secure and maintain our growing fleet
of buses.” Dr. Moss adds, “Our long-range plan calls for ongoing additions and
renovation to the high school to grow its capacity to approximately 1500
students. Moving the buses to a
different location allows the expansion of the high school to continue.” The district's school buses have been housed
behind the high school since 1997, when the district had just 20 buses. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">The second phase of a
multiple-year expansion and renovation of the high school was completed in time
for the start of the current school year. There are 1100 students in the
high school this year. The capacity of
the high school building was 850 students just three years ago.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Dr. Moss states that the
School Board has set aside funds over the past few years specifically for this
type of project. "We recognized
several years ago that there would be a time when our bonding capacity would be
stretched to keep up with demand for new classroom and student activity space.”</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">According to Dr. Moss, 4060
students attend Grain Valley Schools in grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade this year, up from
2160 students just ten years ago, “This is the next step on an on-going journey
of growth as a school district.</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">We will
continue to plan and prepare.”</span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">Site
planning for the facility also leaves room for future additions to the facility
to potentially accommodate twice as many buses and twice as many work bays.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">The Grain Valley School District recently
entered into contract for an eighty-eight acre section of land located north of
Pink Hill Road and west of Buckner-Tarsney Road.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">This land will assist the school district in meeting
long-range planning needs for facilities into the future. Payments on the land
will be made in four annual closings, with the final closing scheduled for the
spring of 2017.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;">No structures are
located on the property.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">This property is adjacent to
existing school district property where North Middle School, Early Childhood Education,
and District Administrative Offices are located. Access to the eighty-eight acres is off of
Pink Hill Road.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roy
Moss highlights the significance of the timing of the purchase, "When
this land became available, the Board felt it was a desirable
property for the location and price to allow for the long-range planning needs
of the district. When it comes to land in the Grain Valley area, timing is
everything. Waiting until the need is
immediate could create an undue financial burden to the district to purchase a property
this size.”<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background: white; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The total cost of the land is
$812,500, which will be paid in annual installments over four years with no
interest fees. Making payments over
several years allows the district to purchase the property without accruing
additional debt. The school district took a similar multi-year approach in 2003
when purchasing the 48.7 acres that makes up the current campus on Pink Hill
Road.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

significant addition and renovation to the current high school. This work will continue in multiple phases for
the next ten or more years to increase that building’s capacity from 850
students two years ago to 1400 students.
In time, the district is expected to need a second high school, as well
as other schools and activity facilities.</span><br />

was ranked second among Kansas City area schools, behind Park Hill High School. Rankings are based primarily on course
offerings, advanced course participation and test scores.</div>
